Reading about the reading life, June 19, 2013

I realized I have not done one of these link posts in a while, yet I have been reading and putting aside items that I think my four readers might find of interest. I often don't read them right away, but I do enjoy reading them when I finally do. It's one of the nice things of using an RSS feed reader. So, here are the things about reading and the reading life I am highlighting this week. I really liked the one about Borges and Bradbury as they are both favorite authors of mine.

• About publishing in literary journals: http://www.writingforward.com/getting-published/how-to-get-published/getting-published-in-literary-magazines-and-journals.This is a post with tips and advice on how to get published in literary magazines and journals. I think aspiring writers out there might find it useful. I think some graduate students in writing programs might find it useful as well. Back when I was in graduate school, during my other life, I was encouraged to write for submission, so this would have been useful to me back then.
• Borges and Bradbury: http://bigthink.com/book-think/bradbury-borges-and-the-future-of-media. Like the author of the post, I had no idea that Borges was a fan of Bradbury and his The Martian Chronicles. By the way, so am I. Bradbury's series of stories about the conquest of Mars is one of my favorites. What is interesting here is how both authors looked to the future, and what they saw is very relevant today.
• Menswear and books: http://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2012/01/02/the-book-club/.This is an interesting article discussing how books are often accessories in men's clothing stores and other "manly" retail venues. Keep in mind the books are kept in such places often for looks; they are rarely read, which I do find kind of sad.
• A Hong Kong Bookstore specializing in banned books: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2013/05/19/world/asia/exposes-of-chinas-elite-a-big-lure-in-hong-kong.html?from=arts. I found this at Papeles Perdidos here.A bit from the article, which is out of The New York Times, "The People’s Recreation Community bookstore and several others on Hong Kong’s teeming shopping streets specialize in selling books and magazines banned by the Chinese government, mostly for their luridly damning accounts of party leaders, past and present. And at a time when many Chinese citizens smolder with distrust of their leaders, business is thriving."
