Booknote: American Vampire, Volume 7

Scott Snyder, American Vampire, Volume 7. New York: DC Comics, 2015. ISBN: 978-1-4012-4882-6.

Genre: graphic novels and comics.
Subgenre: horror, vampires

I am still hooked on this series. In this volume, we have made it to the 1960s. Pearl now uses her family farm in Kansas as a halfway house for vampire refugees running away from the really bad predators, be they human, vampire, or worse. Meanwhile, Skinner is down in Mexico robbing smugglers, but this time, he comes across an evil even he might not be able to handle. There's an ancient evil rising to the surface; that was a plotline I found a little convoluted, a bit more so than usual for Snyder's work who otherwise delivers pretty tight plots. I got the feeling after reading this that this volume is a bit of a space holder until the next big thing happens.

I still like the series for its strong art and sense of place and time. Snyder does very good work moving the vampires through the decades, and capturing the essence of the historical period at any given time. That keeps me coming back. This volume has good suspense, but in this case, we are basically hanging on until the next installment. In the end, yes, I will be seeking the next volume.

For libraries, if you have been collecting this series, then you want to get this one. If you do not, but you have a graphic novels collection, what are you waiting for? American Vampire right now is among the best vampire series going on right now.

Given I am really liking it, I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars.
